Description

We provide the first flat view of the phase space of the Milky Way’s disk, free of projection blurring and selection bias, where we find sharp new structures with order-of-unity contrast in both number density and metallicity. Both features are likely related to resonances of the bar, but no simple model can fully explain them yet. Our mapping technique opens a new window to study galactic dynamics, calling for theoretical explanation and observational search for similar structures in other disk galaxies.
