CITA at 40: A Celebration of Cosmic Discovery

CITA at 40: A Celebration of Cosmic Discovery

Join us in Toronto from May 27-29, 2026, St. George Campus, University of Toronto for a special three-day conference celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA).

What began in 1986 with the enthusiasm of three faculty members and a handful of postdoctoral fellows has grown into the world’s only national center dedicated to theoretical and observational astrophysics. For four decades, CITA has been at the forefront of discovery, exploring everything from the Big Bang and the early universe to the formation of galaxies, the mysteries of black holes, and the birth of stars and planets.

The Kingston meeting predates CITA as the first annual meeting of the theoretical astrophysicists in Canada (which were very few at the time). The inaugural Kingston meeting took place in Kingston, Ontario and has kept the same name since then.
CITA has enthusiastically supported all Kingston meetings throughout the years to strengthen and promote the field of theoretical astrophysics across Canada.

The CITA@40 Kingston Meeting (which will take place in Toronto) honours our remarkable journey and the global community that made it possible. We will look back at 40 years of groundbreaking research, celebrate the countless success stories of our alumni—over 132 of whom now hold tenured faculty positions worldwide—and look forward to the future of astrophysics.

Come and reconnect with colleagues and mentors, forge new collaborations, and celebrate four decades of CITA’s profound impact on science!
